On the evening of November 14th, the English Department of the School of Foreign Languages, in collaboration with the English Association, hosted the 14th English Corner activity in the academic lecture hall situated on the 11th floor of Xuehai Building. This particular English Corner activity was organized and strategized by the English Association, with the theme of "ELECTION".  Ms. Wu Weiping, Ms. Zhou Dan, and Ms. Hu Ye from the English Department were present to provide professional guidance.

The activity began with a game called “Two Truths and One Lie”. All participants were divided into seven groups, with each group nominating one candidate to come onto the stage. The candidates narrated two real events and one  fictional event about themselves in English. The audience, acting as voters, attempted to identify which story was the lie by raising their hands to vote. This part not only enlivened the atmosphere but also honed the students’ logical thinking and communication skills, setting the stage for the subsequent President Campaign session.

Subsequently, the Word Guessing Challenge session ensued. One student, serving as the describer and also the candidate, vividly described words on the whiteboard in English. Two other students with their backs to the whiteboard served as the "party members" and guessed the words quickly based on the descriptions. This session not only tested the degree of tacit understanding and adaptability among the participants but also enhanced the students’ understanding and retention of English vocabulary, laying a solid foundation for the upcoming President Campaign speeches and debates.

The highlight of the event — the Mock President Campaign — brought the atmosphere to its peak. Each group sent forward the winning candidate from the previous words-guessing game to deliver an campaign speech in English, expounding on their exceptional abilities and leadership advantages. After that, the candidates engaged in a heated English debate. They demonstrated rigorous logic and sharp rhetoric, showing excellent English expression skills and debating techniques. This session not only provided a platform for students to showcase themselves and develop leadership skills but also enabled everyone to deeply appreciate the flexibility and significance of English speeches in campaigns and communication.

Through this English Corner activity themed around ELECTION, students not only strengthened their mutual cohesion but also mastered the skills of debate and speech, and enhanced their English language proficiency. More importantly, this activity allowed students to share their stories and express unique perspectives in English within a joyful atmosphere, showing vigor and charm of their youth. We look forward to more students actively participating in such activities, exploring the endless possibilities of English learning together, and continuously challenging and improving themselves!
