School of Foreign Languages of Wuhan University of Technology was established in 2001 by the merger of Department of Foreign Languages of former Wuhan Polytechnic University, Department of Foreign Languages at the School of Humanities of former Wuhan Jiatong University of Science and Technology, and Department of Foreign Languages at the School of Liberal Arts and Law of former Wuhan University of Automotive Technology. There are three undergraduate programs in English, French and Japanese, which were established in 1977, 1993 and 2001 respectively. Among them, the English program is recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Site, and the Japanese program as a Provincial First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Site.
The school adheres to the University Motto of “Embrace Virtue, Pursue Knowledge; Strive for Excellence, Seek Greatness” and the School Motto of “Master Language, Achieve Literary Excellence; Embody Virtue, Attain Far-reaching Impact.” It is committed to building an international, distinctive, teaching- and research-oriented college, based on humanities and supported by science and engineering. The school has formed an educational philosophy of “People-Centered, Teacher-Respecting; Practical and Innovative, Talent-Driven”. The school offers a First-Level Discipline Master's Program in Foreign Languages and Literature, with four Second-Level Discipline Master's Programs in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, and Japanese Language and Literature, and one Master’s Programin Translation and Interpreting. It has cultivated a large number of interdisciplinary talents with international perspectives and outstanding foreign language skills.
The school comprise 7 teaching units, including the Department of English, the Department of French, the Department of Japanese and General Language, 3 Departments of College English and the Department of Postgraduate English. It hosts a strong faculty with 188 full-time teachers, including 17 professors, 107 associate professors, 1 Distinguished Professor for Specialized Programs, 7 University-Level Distinguished Instructors for Premium Courses, 22 University-Level Young Master Teachers, 1 doctoral supervisor, 32 master's supervisors, 2 part-time professors, 12 visiting professors, 12 foreign teachers and several long term employed foreign teachers. More than 100 teachers of the school have given lectures or worked as visiting scholars in the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Japan, Germany and Russia.
As one of the first reform pilot units for national college English teaching, the school boasts modern and multifunctional language laboratories. These include the Audio-Visual and Speaking Laboratory, Model United Nations Laboratory, Simultaneous Interpreting Laboratory, Translation Laboratory, Audio Production Room, Language Scenario Simulation Laboratory, Intelligent Online Autonomous Learning Language Laboratory, and Online Teaching Laboratory. We have built more than 10 internship bases successively such as iFLYTEK, Wuhan Transn Translation Company, Hangzhou Wencai Translation Company, Wuhan Sino-French Ecological Demonstration city, Alliance Française de Wuhan, , Hubei Tianmen Secondary School, Yamato Japanese Language Education Institute, and Vision Overseas.
The school has seven research teams, including the French Studies Centre (recorded by the Ministry of Education), the Interdisciplinary Centre for Literary Studies, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Translation Studies, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Country and Region Studies, the Linguistics Research Centre, and the Corpus Research Centre. In recent years, we have undertaken more than 10 national-level and 20 provincial-level research and teaching projects, published more than one hundred monographs, translated works, textbooks and dictionaries with renowned domestic and international publishing houses, received more than 10 awards for provincial teaching and research achievements, and published more than one hundred academic papers in core journals both domestically and internationally. The school actively promotes international cooperation and exchange programs. It has established long-term academic cooperation and student exchange programs with several foreign universities, including the University of Auckland in New Zealand, the University of Lorraine in France, Yamaguchi University in Japan, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the UK, the Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies in Japan, and the Kumamoto University in Japan. Additionally, the school has set up an internship and practice base in Japan and also participated in the teaching and management of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lorraine in France.
At present, a total of 695 undergraduates and 237 master's degree students are enrolled in the school. With the principle of “Approach Students, Understand Students, Care for Students, Respect Students, Serve Students”, the school focuses on cultivating students with high proficiency in foreign languages and cross-cultural communication skills. The employment rate of the graduates has consistently exceeded 93% annually, with continuous improvements in the quality of overseas study, further education and employment opportunities.
