The Japanese program in the Department of Japanese and International Languages is committed to cultivatingwell-rounded talents with a broad international perspective, a solid foundation in the Japanese language, up-to-date cross-cultural communication skills, fundamental research abilities, and distinctive characteristics in science and engineering.
As the second most popular foreign language after English, the demand for Japanese talents has been consistently growing in recent years. In 2021, Japan's trade with China accounted for 21.3% of its total foreign trade, with over 30,000 Japanese companies operating in China. Consequently, in these Japanese companies there is a strong demand for graduates who major in Japanese. The signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in November 2020 marked the first establishment of a free trade relationship between China and Japan, further promoting mutual cooperation and economic complementarity between the two countries. As a result, there is an increasing need for versatile "Japanese+" professionals who are proficient in bilingual (Chinese and Japanese) communication and familiar with the cultural backgrounds of both countries.
Established in 2001, the Japanese program leverages the school's comprehensive teaching resources to effectively integrate high-quality educational resources from both domestic and international sources. It adheres to a development path characterized by specialization, internationalization, talent training, and wide opportunities, providing students with a high-quality education platform. The program keeps abreast of the latest academic frontiers, regularly monitoring the achievement of its professional orientation, curriculum system, teaching syllabus, and graduation requirements to ensure the systematic and cutting-edge nature of its training system. In 2022, the Japanese program was recognized as a Provincial First-Class Undergraduate ProgramConstruction Site in Hubei.
The Japanese program aims to comprehensively cultivate application-oriented and versatile Japanese professionals with an international perspective and social competitiveness. These professionals can engage in translation, research, teaching, and management work in sectors such as foreign affairs, economics and trade, scientific research, and education. By studying the basic theories and knowledge of Japanese language, literature, economics, business, technology, diplomacy, social culture and related fields, students will receive systematic training in Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation as well as high humanistic qualities and strong social skills. The program will equip students with professional competency to engage in translation, research, teaching, and management work. Over the years, graduates of the Japanese program have pursued further studies abroad, advanced to master's and doctoral degrees, or secured employment in government agencies, large state-owned enterprises, domestic universities, public institutions, multinational corporations, and department of foreign affairs and economic trade. In summary, they have benefited from a wide range of high-quality employment opportunities.
